Nick Lampers - Photography Mentor

I grew up around photography my whole life, seeing my father use his camera as a hobbyist and my grandfathers old slide film. I received my first camera as a graduation gift out of highschool as I was leaving for college to major in recording arts & Mass communication. After the first semester I changed my major to photography and entered the photography program at Middle Tennessee State University out side of Nashville. In that program I learned film photography, and alternative processes. We were taught how to use the zone system for metering for film, how to develop (Push and Pull Process), as well as printing in the darkroom on silver gelatin prints. In that program I also took Large format film, and we in our studio lighting class we used a CFV 50C Hasselblad Digital back to become acquainted with medium format film and digital photography. I am very thankful for going through this program, although the technology can be a little dated, the principles behind shooting film from metering, picking your shots with limited shots available, development and printing really forced me to learn all aspects of taking a photograph. This was transferred over once I shot digital. While I was in college studying film, I was musician and would play shows regularly. So, I started photographing concerts and events. This is where I got my start as a professional after graduating. With having gotten acquainted with difficult artificial lighting from concerts, It was relatively easy for me to operate at other events. shortly after graduating I started photographing sports, weddings and even dog shows. Once the pandemic hit, all of my work went away in a single afternoon. This was what prompted me to move over to product and commercial. In March and April of 2020, I began shooting product work. In an attempt to open up another stream of income, this was also when I decided to start taking retouching much more seriously. From my experience in film, I knew that I could greatly increase the production value of my work if I had a greater understanding of the post production process. I began to become more conceptual with my photography, as I moved towards product and commercial. Since then I have had clients like Yoto, Nordic Naturals and many more. Shortly thereafter, I began to learn Cinema 4d. My idea was to combine photography and CGI the same as Mike Campau and Tim Tadder. Today my main stream of income is retouching and 3D, but I am still an active shooter and use my 500cm every week. My favorite film to shoot is Gold 200, or Porta 400.
