Hi, I'm Jeff.
I've made my living with a camera since 2008. I studied art photography at Syracuse University, then worked in New York shooting covers for Americas Quarterly and editorial for Forbes, Modern Luxury's Manhattan magazine and the Tribeca Film Festival. Brand clients have included Disney, Apple Pay and Burton.
After New York I spent five years in Guilin, China, as creative director of the Chinese Language Institute. I ran the school's brand, website and ad campaigns with a team of eight, and I still consult for the school today.
Now I'm in Denver. I run the content for UFC lightweight Drew Dober, whose YouTube channel I started from zero and grew past 10,000 subscribers, and for Easton Online, a consultancy for BJJ and Muay Thai gym owners. My main camera is a Sony FX3, and I still shoot a Canon 5D Mark II and Mark III.
Over the years I've shot on every Canon 5D, Hasselblad and Phase One medium format, Leica, Fujifilm and a long list of Sony bodies.
theCamera.School is where I write down what I'd tell a friend who just bought a camera: the settings to change first, the gear that's worth the money, and how to get results you're proud of.
How these guides are made
Many guides on this site cover cameras and gear I haven't used myself. Those are research guides: they are built from manufacturer specifications, manuals and published reviews, and every number and spec claim is checked against those sources. Each guide ends with a "How we researched this" box that lists the sources it was checked against and when.
Where a guide draws on my own time with a camera, it says so.
We're re-checking the older guides one by one. Until a guide has been re-checked, its research box says so.
