The short version
- For your best photo files, use the mechanical shutter at base or low ISO, where its dynamic range advantage holds through ISO 1000.
- Set RAW File Type to Lossless Compressed L for full image quality at a reduced file size.
- 4K 60p records full width, oversampled from 7K in 10-bit 4:2:2, while 4K 120p needs a Super 35 crop.
- IBIS alone handles pans but not walking, and Active or Dynamic Active mode adds smoothing at the cost of a crop.
- Turn AF responsiveness down when people or objects are likely to pass between you and your subject.
- Save your finished setup with Save/Load Settings and copy the file from the card to your computer as a backup.
The Sony a7 V settings worth changing first are the ones that protect image quality: RAW Lossless Compressed and the mechanical shutter at low ISO for photos, and full-width 4K 60p in 10-bit 4:2:2 for video. After that, set your frame rate and shutter speed, pick a stabilization mode that matches how you move, and save the whole setup to a card so you can restore it later.
Before you change anything: cards, controls and a backup
If you are moving up from an a7 IV, the a7 V will feel familiar. PetaPixel reports that the chassis is almost identical and that all dials, controls and custom buttons carry over from the a7 IV. TechRadar makes the same point, noting that Sony's conservative design lets muscle memory do the work on shoots where speed matters.
The body has one UHS-II SD slot plus a hybrid slot that takes either CFexpress Type A or SD. Sony's Alpha Universe beginner course, which is built around the Alpha 7R V, covers the choice between SD and CFexpress Type A and why formatting cards in the camera matters. Format every new card in the a7 V before you shoot on it, and record video and long bursts to your fastest card.
Three housekeeping settings
- Release w/o Lens: Disable. The-Digital-Picture's 36-step a7 V setup guide sets this in Shooting Menu 7, Shutter/Silent. As the name says, it stops the shutter releasing when no lens is attached.
- Touch Position Mode: Relative Position. The same guide sets this under Setup Menu 5, Touch Operations, Touch Pad Settings. Relative positioning moves the focus point from where it already sits, which suits working with your eye at the viewfinder.
- Save/Load Settings. When you finish, the guide uses Save New under Setup Menu 2, Reset/Save Settings, then copies the saved settings file from the memory card to a computer for backup. If you ever reset the camera, you can load that file instead of rebuilding every menu.
Photo settings to change first
File format: RAW, Lossless Compressed
The-Digital-Picture's guide sets File Format to RAW and RAW File Type to Lossless Compressed L, which it describes as full image quality at a reduced file size. That is a sensible default for most new owners: you keep everything the sensor recorded while using less card space.
One catch for early buyers: when PetaPixel published its dynamic range coverage in December 2025, a7 V RAW files were not yet supported in Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom, while Sony's free Imaging Edge Desktop software did support them. Check your editor's camera support list before you shoot an important job, and use Imaging Edge Desktop until your usual editor catches up.
The same guide turns off all Lens Compensation options, covering shading, chromatic aberration and distortion, and applies corrections in RAW processing software instead. If you shoot JPEG and do not edit, leave those corrections on so the camera handles them for you.
Use the mechanical shutter for your best files
The a7 V uses a new 33-megapixel partially stacked sensor paired with the Bionz XR2 processor. Building on research by Adam Horshack, William Claff of Photons to Photos and PetaPixel concluded that the camera uses Dual Gain Output with the mechanical shutter at base and low ISO, and that DGO is not available with the electronic shutter.
| Shutter | Max dynamic range at base ISO (Photons to Photos PDR) | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical | 12.45 | Landscapes, portraits, any scene where shadow detail matters |
| Electronic | 10.99 | Fastest bursts, up to 30 fps in full-resolution RAW |
Claff's results show the mechanical shutter's advantage holding through ISO 1000, where the two shutters equalize. PetaPixel's conclusion is direct: for the best possible image quality, use the a7 V at base or low ISO with the mechanical shutter. Chris Niccolls put it this way in PetaPixel's review: "If you need the faster burst speeds, by all means, use the electronic shutter. However, there is a distinct improvement in shadow detail and clarity when using the mechanical shutter instead."
Make the mechanical shutter your default and switch to electronic when you need speed. PetaPixel notes you can have class-leading dynamic range and 30 fps on this camera, just not at the same time.
Set an Auto ISO ceiling
For stills, Photography Blog lists a native ISO range of 100 to 51,200, expandable down to 50 and up to 204,800. In its testing, ISO 50 to 6400 was essentially noise-free, ISO 12800 and 25600 gave more than acceptable results, and ISO 51200 was usable in an emergency. A sensible Auto ISO maximum for a new owner is 12800, or 25600 for dim indoor events where a sharp, slightly noisy shot beats a blurry clean one.
Creative Look and bracketing
The-Digital-Picture's guide sets Creative Look to NT (Neutral), which it says gives a lower contrast histogram. A flatter preview makes it easier to judge highlights and shadows if you shoot RAW and edit later.
If you shoot bracketed exposures, the guide sets the bracket order to minus, zero, plus, which it says considerably eases picking frames for HDR processing, and adds a 2-second self-timer during brackets.
Autofocus: start with tracking, then fine-tune
Sony claims up to a 30% improvement in Real-time Recognition AF on the a7 V, with 759 phase-detection points covering up to 94% of the frame and focus in light down to EV -4.0. PetaPixel's reviewer wrote that you rarely need to tweak autofocus settings for reliable video results: start tracking on your subject and the camera does a fantastic job of keeping it in focus.
Two options are new on the a7 V, according to TechRadar: AF responsiveness, and extra small or large AF point sizes. TechRadar suggests turning responsiveness down when other objects are likely to pass between the camera and your subject, such as shooting across a busy road or players on a football field, so focus stays on the subject.
For static subjects, The-Digital-Picture's guide uses Focus Area: Spot S, while noting that it changes this setting often. A practical split: a small spot for landscapes and products, tracking for people, pets and anything that moves. If your shots still come out soft, the causes and fixes in the Sony a7 IV blurry photos guide are a good checklist, since the two bodies share their controls.
Video settings to change first
Know which modes you have
| Mode | Sensor area | Color | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4K 60p | Full width, oversampled from 7K | 10-bit 4:2:2 | Full pixel readout, no pixel binning |
| 4K 120p | Super 35 crop | 10-bit 4:2:2 | Active stabilization supported |
| Not available | Above 4K, open gate, DCI 4K | No internal RAW or ProRes | Resolution capped at 3840 x 2160 |
Codec options are XAVC HS 4K, XAVC S 4K, XAVC S HD and XAVC S-I HD. PetaPixel and Digital Camera World both flag the lack of higher resolution and open gate recording as the main gaps against rivals.
The strength is readout speed. PetaPixel's Jordan Drake saw around 10ms, nearly three times faster than the a7 IV and similar to the video-optimized sensor in the a7S III and FX3. PetaPixel says this makes the full-width 4K modes much more usable than on the a7 IV, with less rolling shutter risk from a fast readout.
Frame rate and shutter speed
A Sony Alpha Universe lesson for beginners, filmed on the Alpha 6700, recommends starting at 24 frames per second with a shutter speed of double your frame rate, so 1/50, and says Auto ISO is fine while you learn. The same rule carries over to the a7 V: at 60p, set the shutter to roughly double, around 1/125. The Alpha 6700 video settings guide for beginners walks through these basics step by step.
Use 4K 60p when you want slow motion at full width, and save 4K 120p for when you need it, because it crops to Super 35. The crop frames tighter with every lens, so plan your focal length around it.
Picture profile and color
The a7 V records 10-bit 4:2:2 in its 4K modes. Digital Camera World notes that 10-bit 4:2:2 in Sony's S-Log profiles gives plenty of scope for changing colors and lighting in post production. Sony claims 16 stops of dynamic range.
Choose S-Log only if you plan to color grade every clip. If you want footage that looks finished straight out of the camera, stay with a standard look and still record in 10-bit so you have room for small fixes.
ISO for video
Newsshooter lists a video ISO range of 100 to 51,200, and Photography Blog lists an extended top of 102400. For most scenes, let Auto ISO work while you control frame rate, shutter and aperture.
Stabilization
Newsshooter reports up to 7.5 stops of 5-axis IBIS, up from 5.5 stops on the a7 IV. Digital Camera World lists 7.5 stops at the center and 6.5 at the edges, and found the camera impressively stable for subtle handheld moves like pans, but noted IBIS alone won't counter heavier movement like walking.
PetaPixel's video testing found IBIS-only results weak, found that Active mode helped quite a bit but still looked bouncy, and found a massive crop when using Dynamic Active. It also warned that unless you shoot at faster-than-normal shutter speeds, you will see some blurry frames. Sony's beginner lesson explains that digital stabilization works by cropping and zooming in slightly on the picture.
- Static shots and slow pans: IBIS on its own keeps your full frame.
- Light handheld movement: Active mode, which also works in 4K 120p.
- Walking shots: Dynamic Active, accepting the crop and raising your shutter speed, or a gimbal.
Audio: Wind NR and Noise Cut
According to Sony, new in-camera noise reduction works with the built-in mic and external mics to reduce wind noise and other steady background noise, including mechanical noise from a power zoom lens. You choose between Wind NR and the more general Noise Cut. Turn on Wind NR outdoors, and test Noise Cut indoors before relying on it for interviews.
Long takes and heat
Sony says its heat dissipation design allows 4K 60p in 4:2:0 8-bit to record continuously for around 90 minutes. That figure is for 8-bit, so do not assume the same run time for 10-bit or 4K 120p, and do a long test take before an event.
Kit lens and streaming
The FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II kit lens supports autofocus during zooming and built-in breathing compensation on compatible cameras. For live video, the a7 V streams at up to 4K 30p over USB as a UVC/UAC webcam, or over wired or wireless LAN while recording the same content to a memory card.
Coming from the a7 IV
Most a7 IV setup habits transfer, but a few video and stabilization choices change because the hardware improved.
| Feature | Sony a7 IV | Sony a7 V |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor | 33MP Exmor R BSI | 33MP partially stacked Exmor RS |
| 4K 60p | Super 35 crop | Full width, oversampled from 7K |
| Full-width oversampled 4K | Up to 30p | Up to 60p |
| IBIS | Up to 5.5 stops | Up to 7.5 stops |
| Top burst rate | 10 fps | 30 fps, electronic shutter |
| Controls | Dials, controls and custom buttons carried over | |
If you are still shooting the a7 IV, or weighing it against the newer body, the Sony a7 IV video settings guide and the a7 IV first-time setup guide cover that camera's own menus.
Adding a cage
A cage gives you mounting points for a mic, monitor or handle when you start building a video rig. PetaPixel describes the a7 V chassis as almost identical to the a7 IV, but Photography Blog measured it as slightly thicker and heavier at 130.3 x 96.4 x 72.3mm. Confirm a7 V compatibility with SmallRig before you buy any cage for this body.

Questions
Does the Sony a7 V shoot 4K 120p in full frame?
No. The a7 V shoots 4K 120p in 10-bit 4:2:2 only in a Super 35 crop mode. Full-width, uncropped 4K tops out at 60p, oversampled from a 7K readout.
Should I use the mechanical or electronic shutter on the Sony a7 V?
Use the mechanical shutter for the best image quality. In Photons to Photos testing, maximum dynamic range at base ISO dropped from 12.45 with the mechanical shutter to 10.99 with the electronic one. Switch to the electronic shutter when you need the fastest bursts, which reach 30 frames per second in full-resolution RAW.
Can the Sony a7 V record RAW video or open gate?
No. Digital Camera World notes there is no internal RAW video and no ProRes. Video tops out at 4K with no open gate recording, and there is no DCI 4K mode.
What frame rate and shutter speed should I use for Sony a7 V video?
A Sony beginner lesson recommends starting at 24 frames per second with a shutter speed of double the frame rate, so 1/50. If you use Dynamic Active stabilization, PetaPixel found you will see some blurry frames unless you shoot at faster-than-normal shutter speeds.
Can I edit Sony a7 V RAW files in Lightroom?
When PetaPixel reported in December 2025, a7 V RAW files were not yet supported in Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom. Sony's free Imaging Edge Desktop software did support them. Check your editor's current camera support list before relying on it.
